INTERVIEW: Maestro Sofia Delgado – Principal Conductor, Berlin Philharmonic

“I command 120 musicians. At home, the floor conducts me.”

Q: Maestro Delgado, your Charlottenburg apartment is all Zen-Floor. Why wood for a conductor?

Maestro Sofia Delgado:

“Rhythm begins with the body. On stage, I feel vibrations through shoes. At home, barefoot on oak, I feel resonance. The grain is a score—each ring a measure. I rehearse mentally while walking. My tempo accuracy improved 9 %—verified by metronome data.”

Q: You compose at 3 a.m. Any rituals?

“I pace. The floor absorbs footsteps—no echo, no distraction. My latest symphony’s adagio was born at 3:17 a.m. on a single plank.”

Q: For other artists?

“Wood is the silent collaborator. It listens. It responds. It holds the note.”
